Minimum gambling ages vary around the world, and sometimes even between different areas of the same country or state. For instance, in the United States, most individual states set the age limits for gambling within their borders. However, Indian casinos may have different rules, or the state may set two different ages for different forms of gambling.

In the United States, the most common minimum age to be allowed into a casino is 21. However, 18 is also fairly common, with some casinos in popular gaming destinations like New York, California and Florida allowing 18-year-olds to gamble. In Michigan, you must be 21 to gamble in the large Detroit casinos, but those facilities run by Native Americans are allowed to take customers as young as 19.

In Canada, the gambling age is more standardized, though there’s still some variation. In most provinces and territories, you’ll need to be 19 to gamble. However, in Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec and the Yukon, gamblers can start slightly earlier, at just 18 years old.

Given the number of different jurisdictions available in Europe, it’s probably not a surprise that various countries offer different policies – some of which are even more restrictive than those in North America. In France and Germany, most casinos will allow you to gamble at 18, while in the UK, some gambling is allowed as early as 16 (though casino gambling starts at 18). While this is definitely the most common age where you can begin gambling in Europe, there are a few exceptions; for instance, in Greece, you’ll need to be 23 before you can start to play in a casino. In Portugal, tourists can begin playing at 18, but citizens in the country need to be 21 – and some casinos won’t let you play until you hit 25.

The latest crazy in gambling comes from Macau, the semi-independent region of China that is home to dozens of casinos. Given that Macau was formerly a Portuguese colony, it may not surprise you to learn that their laws are similar to those in Portugal; locals must wait until 21 to gamble, but the huge number of tourists that pour in each year can start wagering at just 18.

When it comes to online gambling sites, each site generally follows the applicable laws of the jurisdiction they find themselves in, which is why there is some disparity from site to site. However, most casinos will have their policies clearly stated on their websites, and the site we’ve recommended are all available to all players aged 18 or over.
